Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey
Remains of a 14th century Benedictine Abbey which fell into ruin after Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. Whitby Abbey suffered further damage from German shelling in WWI. A first monastery at the same site, founded in 657, was destroyed by Danish raids in the 9th century.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitby_Abbey

www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/whitby-abbey/history-and-stories/dracula

How beautifully dramatic it looks in monochrome Gudrun! It makes it easy to imagine its history!
Two superb shots.

Thank you so much, Rosa! The clouds made mono mandatory especially if you think of Whitby's Bram Stoker connections;-) Though strictly speaking this concerns St. Mary's Parish church and not the Abbey...

This looks so menacing. So right for Count Dracula. When we visited the sky was blue, and the abbey didn't look a but threatening.
Gudrun club has replied to Amelia club
Thanks very much, Amelia! Whitby in sunshine with blue skies is very attractive:-) On one visit we had sea mist- that was really spooky, you couldn't see a thing until you were right in front of it!

Such a dramatic image. It would be even more wonderful really large so all those details would stand out.

Gudrun club has replied to raingirl club
Thank you, Laura! I understand that larger would be more enjoyabele but since I had some of my photos stolen from a former site I have become more careful and upload only in reduced size.
raingirl club has replied to Gudrun club
Oh, I was thinking of a physical print! Guess I'm old fashioned. Your upload size is fine for my computer, no problem.

Sorry you've had photos taken. Such a pain and so unfair.

Gudrun club has replied to raingirl club
People stealing photos is something you always have to consider these days. It just teaches you never to upload full size.
As to prints, I'm also old fashioned that way, only I don't have any more space in my walls- but I sometimes do photo books;-)

Two outstanding black and white images Gudrun................the sky in both is wonderfully dark and dramatic!

Both are very nicely composed and full of super detail...............sharp from front to back. The main image is one of the best I've seen of this location!
Gudrun club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thanks very much, Keith! In colour it looked a bit "flat", it'a really amazing what b&w can do!
I'd like to see the abbey at night one day, with moon and clouds and maybe some bats thrown in for the Dracula feeling....

2 years ago. Edited 2 years ago.
Gudrun club has replied to volker_hmbg club
Danke vielmals, Volker!

Haha, just seen this after all these years. You and I have the same mind-set for this photo as I have the almost identical shot taken in 2014 and posted in 22. Very nice rendition here indeed with this great cloud formation.
