Tata trucks

Road block on the lateral road between Samdrup Jongkhar and Trashigang. After the end of the monsoon season there were still a few landslides to clear away and all vehicles had to wait until the Dantak road crews opened up to let them through. Bhutanese paint their Tata trucks with all sorts of auspicious signs- for a safe journey:-)

Strassensperrung auf der "Hauptstrasse" zwischen Samdrup Jongkhar und Trashigang. Nach dem Ende des Monsuns gab es noch einige Erdrutsche zu beseitigen und alle Fahrzeuge mussten warten, bis die Strassenbau-Crews von Dantak sie durchliessen. Bhutaner bemalen ihre Tata-Lastwagen mit allen möglichen glücksbringenden buddhistischen Symbolen- für eine sichere Reise:-)

A wonderfully colourful scene Gudrun............and I like the way the drivers still have their traditional dress but modify it with modern replacements like the T-shirts and trainers. Given the condition of the roads and the age and and condition of some of the vehicles I reckon that the more auspicious signs for a safe journey the better!

Great PiPs too. It's great to get a closer look at the decorations on the truck - l particularly like the eyes above the headlights and the wonderful shot of the artwork on the back of the truck!

The cab of the truck reminds me of travelling on the old buses they used in Malta back in the early 70s.

Thanks very much, Keith! The traditional dress is usually also worn over the upper body but they all rolled it down, out driver included- nobody likes the humidity and heat at lower altitudes.
The vehicles may look battered but they usually run very reliably and on Bhutanese roads they never reach their allowed speed of 30 kmh;-)
I remember the old Malta buses, on our first visit there were still some of them around.

Danke, Dany! Von Tibet habe ich auch immer geträumt, aber das wird wohl nichts mehr- aus politischen Gründen und auch wegen der Höhe. In Bhutan oder auch Südamerika ist man schnell in tieferen Lagen, falls man Probleme bekommen sollte- das geht in Tibet nicht und man hört immer wieder von Todesfällen.

Der Glaube an den Schutz durch religiöse Symbole ist in Asien sehr mächtig. Ich habe ein paar Horrorfahrten erlebt, aber die Räucherstäbchen auf dem Armaturenbrett haben wohl das Schlimmste verhindert.

Ich habe mich in Bhutan nie wirklich unsicher gefühlt, vielleicht wegen der buddhistischen Gelassenheit der Fahrer und weil man bei den extrem kurvigen Straßen nur sehr langsam fahren kann. Räucherstäbchen habe ich keine gesehen, dafür aber solarbetriebene kleine Gebetsmühlen fürs Armaturenbrett (China-Import;-)

Da sitzt man stundenlang auf dem Dach und lässt sich durchschütteln - fragt sich bei jedem zweiten Schlagloch, ob das ganze wohl bis zur nächsten Stadt durchhält - bei jedem Halt ist's gemäss dem Fahrer nur noch kurze Zeit bis zum angestrebten Ziel - man sehnt sich nach einem Platz in der Fahrerkabine, da diese vielleicht etwas 'komfortabler' ist - dann sieht man in die Kabine rein und stellt fest, dass das Dach doch angenehmer ist - krümmt die Zehen bei den Überholmanövern in den Gegenverkehr rein - döst halbwegs ein - usw. usw. - und am Ende wars ein tolle Fahrt, die man trotz allem nicht missen möchte :-)))

Schönen Dank, Alex! In Bhutan kann man das mit den gewagten Überholmanövern eigentlich streichen, das habe ich dort nicht erlebt... Indien/Nepal sind da glaube ich ein ganz anderes Kaliber;-) Bei im Schnitt 15 Kurven auf einen Kilometer fahren alle sehr langsam und die Strassen sind so schmal, dass man bei Gegenverkehr sehr zirkeln muss. Bei den schlimmsten Pässen hat man zum Glück meistens erstmal keinen Gegenverkehr, wenn man morgens losfährt, denn die von der anderen Seite starten ja auch erst.

Indien habe ich diesbezüglich nicht mehr in Erinnerung .. aber drei Wochen Nepal ;-))
Ist leider schon ein paar Jahre her (vor panoramio-ser und digitaler Zeit), am Fahrstil hat sich wohl kaum viel geändert. Bloss dass die Motoren sicher etwas stärker geworden sind und die Jungs am Steuer während der Fahrt noch zusätzlich das Smartphone bedienen müssen ...

Ich würde glaube ich Todesängste ausstehen, deswegen zieht's mich nicht nach Indien und Nepal;-) Ich habe nur Delhi-Stadtverkehr erlebt, das war gruslig. In Assam waren zum Glück nicht viele Autos unterwegs und ansonsten hatte ich keine Berührung mit Indien.
