Thrumshing La

Thrumshing La
Thrumshing La (3780m) is Bhutan's second highest mountain pass.
Connecting Mongar in the east to central Bumthang district, the lateral road climbs more than 3000m and has to navigate the most notorious stretch of road in the country at Namling Brak (Namling cliffs).
There the narrow road clings to the cliffside with a 300m sheer drop and no roadside protection to speak of except a few prayer flags above the waterfall. Every Bhutanese remembers the full bus that crashed down the cliff years ago...

No wonder Thrumshing La is covered in masses of prayer flags as everyone wants to say thank you for getting through safely. The incense burner is also well used.

The wind is surely carrying good will in to the surrounding wilderness. I wonder if you had to travel along the Namling cliffs to get here?

Gudrun club has replied to Amelia club
Thank you so much, Amelia! Yes, we did travel that road. I was lucky enough to have a seat on the side of the mountain, the ones sitting on the valley side turned rather pale...;-)
Everyone travelling that road starts really early so as not to meet oncoming traffic from the west.

Danke vielmals, Uwe! Hhm, ob Alkohol so hilfreich wäre?

The prayer flags are very colourful and make a beautiful picture Gudrun. A very sad story about the full bus! I have neighbours who used to teach out there and have seen many of their pictures. A fascinating area and a lovely series.

Thanks very much, Rosa! When they built that road there also were many fatal accidents, it's very challenging terrain. I do envy your neighbours, that must have been a geat experience!

Wonderful color and movement to the prayer flags. (with many a prayer being said as one travels that road!) Spectacular mountainside views. You are far braver than I, just don't think I could made it along that stretch. What an adventure to add to the many memories you have made during your travels Gudrun. :)

Thanks a lot, Chris! I was just sitting in the bus, luckily not on the side of the abyss;-) The weather was fine, our driver was very circumspect- so no worries! It's a different proposition during the monsoon, which is when accidents occur...

A fascinating series Gudrun..............especially your description and picture of that road to the top. There no way on earth I'd have undertaken that..!!

The main image is my favourite..............I just love the colourful prayer flags, and the view of course.

I hope you're enjoying the weekend.

Gudrun club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thank you so much, Keith! In Bhutan you get a guide and driver and they know what they are doing. Tourists usually don't visit during the monsoon which is the time of landslides and accidents.

What a cool series, Gudrun. I like the combination of the colorful fabric and the mountain range. I've never heard of this country. It looks beautiful (but that road looks scary!) :-O

Thanks very much, Karen! Every pass, every bridge in Buddhist countries are full of prayer flags! This small Himalayan kingdom has only been open to tourists for a few decades and retains a lot of its traditions. It has the aim of Gross National Happiness written into its constitution:-)

Gudrun club has replied to grobi358 club

Beautiful

There seems to be lot of literature / philosophy on each of those coloured flags
3 years ago.
Gudrun club has replied to Dinesh club
Thank you, Dinesh! They are lungta (wind horse) prayer flags. Traditionally the horse is the centre, with garuda, dragon, tiger and snow lion in the four corners and mantras (om mani padme hum) printed in between. The colours stand for the elements (green-water, yellow-earth, red-fire, white-air/cloud, blue-sky/space).

Gudrun club has replied to polytropos club
