Inlandeis

Inlandeis
The easiest place to see the Greenland iceshield is on an excursion from Kangerlussuaq along an increasingly rough 35km long gravel road. Kangerlussuaq itself lies at the end of a 163km long fjord and is Greenland's furthest inland settlement with dry, extreme continenal climate (down to -45°C in winter and up to+25°C in summer).

The ice shield like all arctic ice is melting a record rates:
www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2020/oct/13/arctic-ice-melting-climate-change-global-warming

The link for this photo is excellent, Gudrun. It's a frightening process, and nothing we do seems to stop the relentless climate change in the Arctic.

Many thanks, Amelia! What frightens most is the fact that even if we stopped all emissions now the heating would go on for decades!

Gewaltig Gudrun.

Totally impossible to estimate the scale of this! =O

But I guess it is huge =D

Once travelled to USA over Greenland, and it simply looked amazing.

Thanks a lot, Sami! It's huge indeed! And what you see when flying to the USA is just the smaller southern tip of Greenland. Sadly on both the flight in and out there was thick cloud over the ice shield...

Danke vielmals, Uli!

A beautiful image, Gudrun, but the worldwide rate of glacial melt due to climate change is horrifying. We have to hope that governments (not least mine) come to realise the need for action.

Thank you so much, George! I'm afraid there are too many flat earthers in power at the moment:-( The processes that have started will go on for decades even if we hit the brakes now, a frightening thought.

An impressive image, full of amazing detail, especially when viewed large. Very well composed and taken Gudrun.

Combine the photo with the information in the link though............and things look very serious indeed...........when will the powers-that-be across the world wake up to the danger of climate change and actually DO something about it except talk and make empty promises?

Gudrun club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thanks very much, Keith! Some idiots still talk about it being "weather" and not climate, they just don't get it! Even if they get voted out and something is being done I'm not sure we can stop the heating, at least not for decades.

I think that the winters would be too much for me. I'm amazed that people can thrive there.

Gudrun club has replied to Esther club
Thank you, Esther! -45 is the extreme that is rarely reached these days, -30 are more common, but I agree you cannot stay out long in such temperatures;-)

Gudrun club has replied to polytropos club

Hi Gudrun

A very nice picture, which brings the point home..
Everywhere I have been looking for glaciers, they have retreated miles...
Definitely the Earth is getting warmer.. What we can do about it.. No realistic idea!!!!!

I have flown over Greenland many times on my way to / from America, and all I remember of it is miles of snowy wastes.. It is nice to see some real details here!!

Best Wishes, a nice week, and stay safe!!
Peter

Thank you so much, Peter! Sadly we didn't see anything on our flight because of cloud but others have reported vast meltwater lakes in the middle of the ice shield, very alarming indeed!

Unusual pic, Gudrun! Are plants colonizing the newly exposed ground at all?
Gudrun club has replied to slgwv club
Thanks a lot, Steve! Most of the uncolonized bit is unstable moraine, but over time lichen and mosses will take hold, very much later maybe some berries (ericaceae) and dwarf willow.
