Plane wreck (PiP)

In 1968 three American Lockheed T-33 crashed near Kangerlussuaq. They couldn't land because of whiteout conditions and ran out of fuel but the pilots managed to save themselves. Bits of wreckage still lie around by the roadside.

Lepus arcticus (5xPiP)

This arctic hare wasn't shy at all, I could watch it for about ten minutes from less than 10m distance. It fed on the grasses and berry bushes right near the Greenland icecap.

Russell Glacier (3xPiP)

Russell glacier is an outlet glacier of the Greenlandic ice sheet. It is 25km from Kangerlussuaq and can be reached via Greenland's longest road. This is an increasingly rough gravel road that is ca 40km long from fjord to ice sheet. The first part was built by the American military when they ran the airport at Kangerlussuaq (now Greenland's only international airport), the second part by VW because they wanted to test their cars on the ice. They did this for 10 years until they thought the enterprise too e…

Kangaamiut

Kangaamiut was founded in 1755 by a Danish trader and then called Sukkertoppen. As the harbour is rather exposed most of the inhabitants were later moved to Maniitsoq, founded in 1781 and with a sheltered harbour. Kangaamiut these days is a small fishing community with some 300 inhabitants. It has a harbour for small boats only so that the coastal ferry Sarfaq Ittuk has to use her lifeboat to get travellers on and off.
