Snowplough

Snowplough
In winter conditions (which can last into May) all vehicles going to the North Cape have to drive in convoy behind a snowplough. The convoy starts and goes back at set times, at all others the road at the turnoff to the North Cape is closed.

I love seeing these, Gudrun. Here we are experiencing the hottest summer on record...it was 46C last week. I love looking at snow and reading about your weather!

Thanks a lot, Diana! The weather where I live in Germany is dull, 4 degrees plus and rain...I'd prefer real winter but wouldn't want to have your heat!

Hi Gudrun

Very nice picture of a very big snow plough!
And we think it is bad here when we get a few cms of snow!

Best Wishes, and a good weekend
Peter

Thank you so much, Peter! Lol, it's the same here, people simply aren't used to snow any longer... Up north it's just normal and everyone takes it in their stride.

Impressive looking machine.....................and very necessary in the sort of weather in that part of the world.

Gudrun club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thank you, Keith! The worst bit are the snow drifts, it's an exposed plateau there and it can get extremely windy, so much that buses are blown off the road...

Now _that's_ an interesting way to do things! It guarantees, I guess, that snow won't have time to drift back over the road.
Gudrun club has replied to slgwv club
And still it often manages to drift back, especially over night and in spite of some serious snow fences....

I tell you my experience of the convoy in Norway : on 2018 march 26th we took a convoy organised between a place north of Lakselv and Honningsväg (75 kms).
At time, the snowplough started and behind there were about twenty cars and trucks. After 3 or 4 kilometers, the snowplough was driving at 70/75 km/h ( the driver was late ?)
In a snowstorm at dusk (it was - 20° in the wind), on an iced road, it is very difficult to drive at such a speed, so all the cars were lost after 25 kilometers (even the norwegian drivers).
We encountered lost cars from the previous convoy and cars from our convoy planted in the snow on the side of the road. In this case the first one to pass stops to help..
After more of an hour, we found the lodge lost at Sarnes near Honningsväg. Thanks to my daughter who was driving but no thanks to the Finnmark road department members.

Gudrun club has replied to Sylvain Wiart
Goodness, that was a rogue driver! They aren't supposed to do that... Good to hear you managed to get through!
The few times I have been to the North Cape the snowploughs actually were rather slow to keep the tour buses and tourist cars from speeding.

That's an impressive snow plough, Gudrun, but I was surprised when I looked at your other image that it isn't running on tracks. I note though, that you mention it uses spikes and chains on the tyres.
Gudrun club has replied to tiabunna club
Thanks a lot, George! Norwegian cars always use spikes in winter, that's why the roads are cleared of excess snow but not salted. The chains usually come into play if there's ice (rain on frozen ground). In the PiP you can see there's ice underneath the snow, I saw people slipping and falling even with shoe spikes on.

... taken out of context, and if the front end rather than the back -- it could be some Star Wars mega-machine on a frozen planet ...
... an unusual point-of-view; thus, well seen ... and of course, well done ...
(and informative PiP) ...

... modern inventions and equipment: have revolutionized so much of what we do ... could you imagine what that trip would be like without the plow or the heated bus? ...
Gudrun club has replied to L. L. Wall club
Thank you, Wally! I guess nobody would go there in winter;-) In former times there wasn't even a road. People went by boat and then had to climb up onto the plateau via a very steep path.

Fantastic pictures, Gudrun! My definite favorite though is your inset, it's just outstanding! I love the pov so much, the snow plow is so HUGE! :D Great job with your pictures, and thank you so much for the information too. I don't know what it's like to live in a place where it's so cold all of the time so I am fascinated by your stories! :)

Thanks very much, Janet! I was only there as a tourist but amazingly quite a few people not born in the far North are living there ( even from as far as Thailand or Sri Lanka...).

so übermäßig groß ist der Schneepflug jetzt nicht - bei uns fährt auch ein Drei-Achser im Winterdienst.....
interessante Geschichte, mit den Konvois.
Gudrun club has replied to Boarischa Krautmo club
Besten Dank, bk!
