Columns with a manneristic twist

Columns with a manneristic twist
The Sunday Challenge (TSC): TWIST

The chapel of the Langue of Auvergne in St.John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta, is dedicated to St Sebastian. The 17th century altar painting is attributed to Lucas Garnier, the reredos with its spiral columns is probably one of the earliest installed in the church in the late 16th century.

Ruesterstaude, Heide, LotharW, menonfire and 15 other people have particularly liked this photo

Kind of double twist on those columns. Who made them, probably had to twist the brain cells few times to figure out how to implement the idea! =D

Thanks, Sami! I bet they did twist their brain cells a lot in the epoch of Mannerism- the transition from Renaissance to Baroque can't have been easy;-)

Thanks, Valerie! The limestone on Malta is ideal for carving- the inhabitants excelled at it from the stone age:-)
