Valletta was founded in 1566 by the Knights of St John as a fortified city with a strict grid pattern built on a hilly peninsula (Monte Sciberras). The shallow steps can be found in many of the city's streets because the knights couldn't manage anything higher in their heavy suits of armour. Valletta wurde 1566 vom Johanniterritterorden als befestigte Stadt auf der Halbinsel Monte Sciberras gegründet. Die Strassen verlaufen ohne Rücksicht auf die Topographie im strengen Schachbrettmuster, die typischen flachen Treppen sind den schweren Rüstungen der Ritter geschuldet.
