(Photography Chat!) Abstract Beauty: Deteriorated Orange Safety Tape on Plastic Netting
I've been taking/making pictures now for several years, and after 100,000 pictures*, I can offer at least one bit of solid advice: EXPERIMENT! Take pictures of things you don't think will work out! Take pictures of subjects that look strange! Think about how you would normally take a picture and then try to take it another way. More often than not, you will be surprised at the results. I can't tell you how many times I've mumbled to myself, "Oh brother, this is a bad idea, it's going to look terrible." But I take the picture. Different angles. Different distances. Different apertures. And I almost always end up being amazed at the interesting results!
When I let the dogs out this morning, I looked up towards the sun and saw some plastic netting shining with melted frost and thought it might be a cool picture. I brought out my camera and could see that my initial images weren't going to work out. So I got closer. Tried some different ideas, and then I noticed a piece of orange safety tape tied to the netting that had deteriorated in the weather and was now just a knot of odd plastic. Now that WAS interesting and made a very nice focal point. I started playing with the distance, angle, and aperture to play with the light dancing on the netting. In the end, I found that a good half dozen of the pictures I made were keepers, but this one in particular is my favorite. I decided on a 16x9 ratio to add to the uniqueness of this image. To stand back, all you would see is a boring, nothing of sagging plastic net with sun shining on it. But with some experimenting, I ended up with an image that, I hope, is far from boring! :)
*this number is so high because I take sets of apertures and angles for most subjects. The number of subjects I've photographed is FAR less...40-50k? I don't know! :D
