You're All I Need To Get By

The duo of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (Thomasina Montgomery) sang the original "You're All I Need To Get By" (Ashford - Simpson) in 1968. Wikipedia: "The lead vocals were recorded separately by the two singers and combined during the mixing process, reportedly to cut studio time, and give time for Terrell, who was using a wheelchair, to recover from surgery on the malignant brain tumor that would ultimately cause her death in 1970". The song reached number seven on the pop and topped the R&B charts. The track is on the album "You're All I Need", the second LP recorded by the team.

Aretha Franklin interpreted "You're All I Need To Get By" in 1971. This time the tune peaked at nineteen pop and number three on the R&B charts. The track is on her "Greatest Hits" release. Aretha has received an incredible amount of deserved accolades including honorary degrees or doctorates from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Berklee, Wayne State and the U of Michigan.
