A Kettleness view

A Kettleness view
A look at this characteristic headland between Whitby and Runswick Bay that housed quarries in the 18th century. The quarries used to be for mining ‘alum’ and ‘jet’, that eventually caused most of the high village to slip into the sea, as a result of severe instability in 1829. There were no casualties as the slide was slow. The new settlement was relocated slightly further inland. On the high headland itself there used to be a Roman Signal station.

Great information Herb. A beautiful bay and I like your framing showing the stone on the right, which I suppose is the top of a wall? Cheers, Rosa.

Always happy to have you along Rosa. Yes, its the wall here. You really don't want to be on the other side of that!

The indentation of the coast and the erosion of the cliffs are splendid!
The different colors reveal the diverse composition of the rocks
The Romans knew how to locate and explore raw materials, very well
The foreground is also very beautiful
Your note is a very interesting story and to always keep in mind
Superb and many thank, Herb

Thanks Judite. A great of natural as well as man-made erosion here bringing about a lot of different colours to be seen in the right light. I know the Romans were very good at most things including mining. they had many towers around England. Glad you liked it.

A fantastic view over this piece of the coast Herb. I like the curve of the bay which leads the eye nicely along the headland, and the grey tones of the sea which merge nicely into the tones of the sky. I also like the green and brown colours in the landscape. The rocks in the right hand corner anchor the shot beautifully!

Thanks for this appraisal Keith You always put more into it than was my original thoughts. I just saw it as very interesting and then spend a few moments composing the scene. These pictures here are always a little smaller than the originals and that gives me some scope to crop for the best frame and virtual p.o.v. Of course the colours of the rock and landscape here are down to man and nature.

A grand walk indeed. it was the first time we had done this section and it was well worth it. As you can see, the weather could have been better though.
