Clifden Castle

Clifden Castle
Quite a walk from the road, high above here. The castle actually faces a beautiful bit of coastline only about 200 metres below and right left of me here. One of those ruins which looks better from afar rather than nearby where you see the decay. A nice detour though and completely free to wander down this track. See PiPs

In reality an old ruined Manor House built c. 1818 for John D'Arcy, the local landowner, in the Gothic Revival style. Uninhabited after 1894 it fell into disrepair. In 1935, ownership passed to a group of tenants, who were to own it jointly, and it quickly became a ruin. WiKi

Another castle for my collection here. My, we have an awful lot of these in the British Isles! Glad you enjoyed it.

You could have used this for the Secret Photographer Challenge, it's a shame it was allowed to fall into a ruin

Ah Peter -so you partake in that esteem competition too? As I was putting this here, I thought, "this would have been nice for the HFF group" but didn't think of it for the SPC at all-a pity perhaps as it is probably much better than the ones I have there :) Ah well, its only a game!
As you say - a great pity that this is now a ruin. On the other hand it may have stayed a grand home and we, the public not allowed anywhere near it!

Thanks a lot my friend. I started off with the PiP image but decided that they were both of interest enough for individual comments. Glad you like them both.

total shame but like lots of old things cost money but nothing to fall to ruin. totaly love this country side it could be so easily half a world away.

This looks so casually planted here Steve, without a care in the world but obviously too expensive and too much trouble to keep going. As you say, a great pity, but I am glad it is still standing at least. Half a planet away from your neck-of-the-woods Steve. Glad you liked it.

Schöne Komposition! Der Weg führt im Bogen zur Burg. Aber wer hat das weiße Haus dorthin gebaut, eine Sünde!

As you say Trester, a great curving track here to the castle. I fully agree about the white house. Maybe it does not look as bad from other angles but...yes, a sin!

It looks much older - what a pity it's been allowed to decay. A lovely landscape image.

Thanks George. Up close it looks more like concrete walls and turrets and so not nearly as authentic. A folly in the true meaning! Glad you liked it.

A nicely composed image with great leading lines.............I like the juxtaposition of the old ruin and the modern house nearby.

Another nicely composed image of the castle in the distance!
Did you go down the track for a closer look?

Hi Peter another image to sweeten your day here. I think you may have missed the accompanying PiP here which simply goes to the photo before this, which takes us down the lane to the back of the castle. I have now included another PiP which shows the castle much closer.
