The Milky Way and Digley Reservoir

The Milky Way and Digley Reservoir
Another rare clear night with hardly any moon coaxes me out again to our moorlands between Manchester and Holmfirth, Yorkshire. Here we see the now familiar red glowing transmitter of Holm Moss but also a moorland reservoir called Digley. We can still see the light pollution of our great city of Manchester some 15 miles away from here, shetered somewhat by the trees and hills to my right. The tower is directly south of me.
Best viewed full size on black.
This photo is another massive stitch panorama of 15 photos. Yes 15! all portrait taken in three rows of 5 across. Each photo taken at: ISO1600, F2.8, 20 secs using my Nikon 7100 self times and Tokina 11-16mm F2.8G.
Again I am indebted to my Ipernity friend Steve Paxton for his help in all this.

ColRam, Karp Panta, Andy Rodker, Holger Hagen and 18 other people have particularly liked this photo

I like this shot You can see the country side so you feel you know the place. Its a real shame the the M/W is in Manchester light plume but the milky way is there alright. once you can getaway from this area and get a black night you will be in paradise. All this plaice makes it easier when you get the real thing. Always happy to help anybody who would like to give it a go.

As usual Steve you comment from the heart. I know that you are right about getting to darker places. My time on this, without doubt makes me stronger for future Stella subjects. Again, many thanks for all your help and guidance with this and astro photography in general.

I also like this one Herb..............it's really beautiful..!! Even with the light pollution, you have still captured an amazing amount of astral detail. Nice one..!!

Cheers Keith. Very happy that in your eyes I have succeeded. I enjoyed this outing on a rare warm evening and was more than happy with the results here. I look forward to getting something better in a black sky area. Ironically, the place we stopped in Ireland was a black-sky area but that was no good when filled with clouds as they were.

A wonderful creation Herb it's not something I have ever tried I must have a go sometime, I wonder if exposure stacking would help with the light pollution

Hi Peter and thanks for just enjoying this. The whole thing can get rather technical but I have enjoyed my results here. You may have a point in the 'exposure stacking' akin to making a hdr maybe. I did try that and it made the MW stand out a bit better but mucked the rest up. Maybe something to experiment with. After some research I see some other astro photographers has had some success with that. Cheers for the hint.

Very well done, Herb. A great astro image, well worth all the effort which went into it and despite the light pollution from the city.

Thanks a lot George, I came across some more of your Milky Way bows and again, I realise that the comment you make above is praise indeed for me. As I said to John above, an uphill struggle.
