All Saints, Horsey

All Saints, Horsey
All Saints is a single celled building with a round tower. The round tower is Norman I think. A tall octagonal bell tower was added on the eve of the Reformation. In the summertime the church is mostly hidden by trees.

Nouchetdu38, Rosalyn Hilborne, , Jean and 11 other people have particularly liked this photo

A round tower, octagonal belltower and a thatched roof. Three unusual features in a single church. The trees make a good frame and the shadows of the bare branches look good on the thatched roof.

Many of the old round tower churches in Norfolk have thatched rooves, Graham. I believe that some of the thatch is peeking through the rafters here, although it seems OK from the outside. I have tried to get photos of this in the summer - it's almost impossible to see it.

You really must, Steve, especially if you go to Winterton again. But, as I said before, you only have about a 4 month window before the trees overwhelm the view. ;-)

This is a beauty, Amelia. They have so many beautiful old churches in the UK, but this one is unique. I've never seen one with a thatched roof. The round tower, too, is unusual and makes me think of Ireland, not England.

There are over 100 round tower churches in this part of England, Ron. The Normans must have been very busy! many of them have thatched rooves as well.

Please excuse the archaic form of the plural for roof. When I was a wee lass that was the proper spelling and I can't get used to 'roofs', and still pronounce it as rooves!

What an unsusual little church! You caught it in beautiful light, the shadowplay of the branches is interesting! I can imagine that in summer the leaves obstruct the view.
