  • The first full day with my new lodgers ahead and all is quiet, that won't last

    - 17 Mar 2013 - 4 comments
Happy St Patrick's day to all. The first full day of the full house starts, well it started at 6:30am when Sooty decided he wanted somebody to talk to so he pawed me awake and told me some tale, maybe the cats had decided between them that they would allow me to stay who know? which was very kind of them. They both followed me downstairs had some breakfast and a look at the birds through the window then went back upstairs to be with Ellen no doubt. All is quiet for now but that won't last wh…

    - 16 Mar 2013 - 3 comments
Well the move is over but there is a lot to sort out just to get into the bedroom, bombsite is the only description that comes close. On the plus side the kitties seem to have settled, Sazzles made friends straight away and settled down on the settee,Sooty sulked and hid behind it for a while but soon fell under my spell and after exploring the room and eying the garden up they both had a catnap,a sure sign that they have settled. All is quiet now and Stephen and Gemma are coming round tonigh…

  • Walking in the rain and a treat for lunch brings back memories

    - 14 Mar 2013 - 7 comments
The rain came as I wandered off for a stroll this morning. This meant I had to cut through the allotments and head homeward. Then it happened, the aroma from heaven drifted to meet me. The local chippy had their smell magnet on full throttle. I was powerless to resist and ended up with fish and chips for lunch and it drove the rainy day blues away. Memories of childhood visits to the chippy flitted through my feeble brain. Back then the means of wrapping the delights of fish and chips was a li…

    - 14 Mar 2013 - 3 comments
I had a good start to the day,the scrap man was here before 8 so with the council picking up the beds yesterday and the normal rubbish and recycling stuff also done I am as junk free as I can be. You watch Ellen change all that. Her room is empty, the paintwork etc is washed down and the small room we will use for storage is as clear as I can make it so all is ready. I was thinking of putting this ad in the local press what do you think? Good home wanted for daughter and two cats, cats are…

  • A very cold day,a trip to mothers and birds on the reservoir

    - 11 Mar 2013 - 2 comments
A lovely morning but a very cold one still minus 3c at 9 o'clock feeling a lot colder with a strong north easterly coming in over the snow clad fells. I was off to visit mother and give her a belated Mothering Sunday gift. I got her a wisteria bonsai kit. There are three small pots a seed for each and compost to suit. She does miss her garden so this will give her something to tend. I flashed the pass and caught a bus to half a mile of so from her house,I didn't fancy tackling the channel sid…

    - 10 Mar 2013 - 2 comments
I have just about finished the big clearance one or two more little things to ditch and I'm done. My son Stephen came round to help me move the divan beds and chest of drawers out ready for collection and I have the stuff ready for the scrap man so all is under control. Now I await the whirlwind that is Ellen and her two crazed moggies. As you know Jenny is staying with her daughter for a few days but we still have our late night telephone conversations. The latest news is she spent some tim…

Another wet one here as I start on day 2 of the clear out.I have to phone the town hall and see which day they can collect the two divans and the chest of drawers. Then is is into battle,I am not missing out on walking because it is raining again gggrrrr. The news from my daughter is the likeliest day for her to turn up is Thursday if all goes to plan so not a lot of time left. I have a pan of lamb stew in the slow cooker so I won't be spending time prepping meals. Catch you in a little while…

  • Update on the clearance

    - 07 Mar 2013 - 3 comments
I have made a good start to the clear out (see earlier blog). I have got some things ready for the scrap man; a printer, monitor, scanner, a well cannibalized computer,a VCR, a standard lamp 2 metal tubular chairs and various other odds and ends, The printer and monitor etc were projects I have collected over time with the intention of bringing them back to life but it never happened. I have removed a tatty old set of shelves from the wall after finding a new home for over 300 cd/dvds and trashe…

  • The rain returns, a lodger on the way and today's fact

    - 07 Mar 2013 - 4 comments
I looked around the garden yesterday and decided another dry day and a start was on the cards. The grass could have it's first cut and I could start tackling the weeds. This morning I awoke to rain of course so that job is on hold before it even starts. Later in the month I will have a lodger,my daughter Ellen is finally breaking up with her partner and cannot afford to keep up the rental payments on her place. This means she will be with me until she can bank enough to get a smaller place o…

  • A trip to the opticians, new toastie maker and fact and quote of the day

    - 06 Mar 2013 - 3 comments
A busy morning this morning I had to go for my eye test. a slight change in my near vision so new specs needed they will ring me when ready. Luckily with me being an old codger the examination and specs are free. You can add money and buy designer frames if you wish but the freebies are neat enough. From the opticians I headed back to the island and a detour to the chemist to pick my meds up and then home for a chew and a brew. I have the washing machine to fill now and apart from sorting d…

  • beach, crows and facts of the day

    - 05 Mar 2013 - 3 comments
On a nice sunny morning I headed for the beach,It was a hazy morning which had the advantage of hiding the triffids from view,I knew the tide was going out and wanted to show you the sand. when I reached pebble beach I battled my way through what is laughingly called a path, very coarse grass that gets higher and denser as the year moves on. The tide was indeed a long way out and still receding so I took a couple of snaps as I strolled along.Time to leave but not before I took a shot of the pebbl…

  • A brisk walk,Batman lives and odd facts

    - 04 Mar 2013 - 6 comments
A cool north easterly was blowing this morning with clouds scuttling around hiding the sun. I decided on a long walk over the bridge for some shopping. After a brief chat with some of the fishermen preparing their craft for the season I called at Iceland for my big shop. It's been 3 weeks since I did one so a lot to stock up on. Brains faggots are on offer at £1 for 6 so I snaffled two packs of those. A new line in pies caught my eye. I am a sucker for pastry and could not resist trying thes…

  • From Kayak to barge

    - 03 Mar 2013 - 2 comments
When I started out on life's journey into the big grown up world my body was slim and streamlined like a Kayak and like a Kayak it took me down life's river, white water, rocks and all. I took a few bumps along the way to get to calmer waters. Now my body is a little plumper, the paintwork is flaking the body work shot but it carries me along at a steady pace without too much danger of shipwreck just like an old canal barge. Happy sailing on life's waterway folks, may the tide be always with…

  • learning to live together

    - 03 Mar 2013 - 3 comments
When Margaret and me got together and set up house there were lots of changes. I don't mean the big differences but small things. I found the kitchen and bathroom products she bought totally different to what I grew up with, washing powder, cleaning products, soaps etc.On the food front things like sauces and and even brands of food products such as bread were all new to me. The way she cooked was also something new,we would have more of somethings I was used to and less of others. None of this…
