VR Letter Box

VR Letter Box
An unusual Victorian letter box near North Brewham, Somerset. It looked like it was still in use but I cannot find anything out about it. A closer look in PiP.

The NOTICE reads: Letters which contain COIN if posted as ordinary letters will be charged on delivery with a special Registration FEE of EIGHTPENCE (8d)

It has been pointed out to me that it may be painted black to show it is decommissioned. Good job I didn't post a letter ;-))

Lovely old wall box, Rosa. It looks like it has been painted black to indicate it has been decommisioned. Cheers, Joe

Oh, so it might be a private box belonging to the cottage. Have to admit, if I had a letter on me I probably would have posted it there. LOL! Cheers, Rosa.

A wonderful find the opening doesn't seem to be blocked so I would think it is in use, there are quite a few red Victorian ones about, a good day for sitting under a tree Rosalyn

Joe may have the answer Peter. It may be painted black to show it's decommissioned...I wonder how many people's letters they get posted there!!? MOT on Friday, so no sitting under the tree. Car needs a clean ;-)) Have a lovely sunny day.

An interesting old letterbox. I guess letters are increasingly out of fashion with email, so it can enjoy being purely ornamental.

A sad fact George. During this period of lockdown Royal Mail have been busier than Christmas with parcels though.

Greatly historical find Rosa and lovely photos which takes back in time.
I don't know why :-) But I think that it is still in use.
All the best to you .

I thought it was still in use Bea, as I could put my hand in the opening, but Joe thinks it is painted black to show it is decommissioned, so it may be for deliveries to Mill Cottage. It was in a lovely countryside setting. Maybe that's what takes you back in time. I loved seeing the post box and stopped the car to take a closer look :-)
All the best, Rosa.

What a fascinating find Rosa..............I like historical oddities like this letter box. Nicely captured.

There's a group on here which I've recommended. Someone on there might know more.

Oh yes, I have a photo in that group! Thank you for the link. I kind of hope it is still in use, but am beginning to think it belongs to Mill Cottage. Good job I didn't have a letter to post, or it would have gone in there ;-))

It's lovely, and so is the little sign! They should probably at least say it's decomissioned. ;-b

Hi Rosa

A very nice picture, and wonderful find.

Usually an 'out of use' letterbox has the slot blocked up, for obvious reasons.

As for colour, well do you remember after the 2012 olympics, the boxes near the gold medal winners were painted gold? (I did have a pic from the one outside Victoria Pendleton's house, but I can't find it now)

Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!
Peter

Hi Peter,
Yes, you are quite right about that and I still cannot find anything out about it. There are a couple of gold ones near here. I hope you are able to find the one you mention. It would be nice to see.

Best wishes & good weekend,
Rosa.
