Liberation Square and Liberation Station area, St. Helier - 7 Aug 2019 (P1030903)
Wednesday 7 August 2019 – A view from Fort Regent in St. Helier showing the outline of the main bus station (Liberation Station) featuring the bus station area.
The gabled stone building facing Liberation Square was once the railway station building for the railway to the western side of the island which closed in the mid 1930s. It now forms the one of the entrances to Liberty Wharf Shopping Centre which runs diagonally to the right.
The apartment building beyond it was where the railway tracks and platforms stood and the passenger waiting area of the main bus station (Liberation Station) stands on the ground floor. Buses load beneath recreational area attached to the apartment building. However, due to the low height the double deckers load outside the bus station at kerbside stands.
In the photograph is Jersey Bus and Boat Tours former London Transport Park Royal bodied Leyland 7RT RTL326 (J 8903 formerly KGU 284) which was following one of Libertybus Scania N230UD OmniCity double deckers, one of five in the fleet that had also operated on the streets of London having been new to CT Plus, London which, as with Libertybus (CT Plus Jersey), is part of the HCT Group.
The red kiosk in the centre of Liberation Square is that of Jersey Bus and Boat Tours. To the left of that is a white ice cream kiosk behind which is the blue kiosk of Tantivy Blue Coach Tours.
The paved area in the foreground of the photograph was for many years the bus departure and parking area for the local buses (JMT etc) named the Weighbridge. The JMT garage was located to the left of the buildings in the photograph.
