Entrance to Liberation Station, St. Helier - 6 Aug 2019 (P1030675)

Entrance to Liberation Station, St. Helier - 6 Aug 2019 (P1030675)
Tuesday 6 August 2019 – The main bus station (Liberation Station) in St. Helier was opened in 2007 as part of a low rise apartment block building (on left). The passenger waiting area stands on the ground floor with the buses loading behind the building beneath an outdoor recreational area forming part of the residential facilities. The latter appears to be a self imposed obstacle of design for it prevents access to buses any higher than 3.5 metres.

The bulk of the Libertybus fleet is single deck although some double deckers are operated on a limited range of services and as a consequence the loading stands for these are located on the street outside the bus station. The railway station and tracks for the railway to the west of the island occupied the site until closure in the mid 1930s. A shopping centre (Liberty Wharf) now stands behind the high walls and glass panels in the background on the site of the former abattoir, a listed building which has successfully been given a new lease of life for modern times.
