Ippolit Petrovich Pryanishnikov by Aleksandrovski
Ippolit Petrovich Pryanishnikov (1847-1921); Russian baritone.
He studied singing at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1873/74. He started his professional career in Italy where he made guest appearances at various theaters in the years 1875/77. From 1878/86 he was engaged at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and from 1886/89 at the Tiblisi Opera, where he also worked as a stage director.In 1881 he created at the Mariinsky the role of Lionel in Tchaikovsky's "The maid of Orleans". He was the organizer and leader of the first Russian Opera Company in Kiev (1889/92) and Moscow (1892/93). His most memorable roles were the title role in Rubinstein's "The Demon", the title roles in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" and "Mazeppa" and Mizgir in Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Snow Maiden". Mizgir was a role he created at the première in 1882 at St. Petersburg. He was also a vocal teacher and one of his most famous pupils was the tenor Nikolai Figner.
On the photo he is seen as Don Giovanni in Mozart's eponymous opera.
