Doll and SR-1

Doll and SR-1
My first SLR camera, a Minolta SR-1 purchased new in the early 1960s. As a promotional gift, the camera came with a free Japanese geisha doll on a base with a Minolta plaque. It seems this must have been a very limited promotion, because I have been unable to find any other images of one of these dolls. A slightly late image for World Photography Day.

Another image of the geisha doll in the clickable PiP.

You have kept the geisha doll and the camera in excellent condition George. I'm afraid I cannot help with the translation! A beautiful and well taken picture.

A wonderful image for WPD, I Googled the dolls the first result was you Fame at last !!!!! there is also a photo from Flickr someone has four of them all different to yours, do you still use it ? film is making a comeback in the UK what I would describe as everyday colour film is in short supply they can't keep up with the demand
Back again I have the Photographic Blue Bool 1965/66 the catalogue of Wallace Heaton London the price was £87 4s 3d I bought a Mamiya in 1966 £39 19s 0d plus £3 4s 6d for the case I still have ir it's a fixed lens SLR

Thank you very much, Peter. No, I must admit I don't use it now, though the idea is sometimes there. I'd heard that film is (like vinyl records) again becoming popular, but there is no camera store nearby and I must admit the immediacy and low cost per shot of digital tends to be the decider for me. I've since checked and I bought this in late 1964, when it certainly stretched my limited budget at the time.

I was 1 year old when you got your first camera, George! That gives me a measure of how much I have to learn from you and other photographers here on Ipernity. Both the camera and the doll look lovingly preserved and make a great subject for WPD.

I have that camera! (But no doll, sadly.) My mother purchased it for me used when I went to high school. I learned photography on her Rolleiflex, but this camera was my constant companion. I still think it's a great camera, though it feels heavy to me now.

It's very special that you took this photo of your camera (and doll) for World Photography Day. It shows our devotion to what we do and the tools we use. You obviously know about lighting because you've lit this just right so we can see all the details easily.

Thank you for sharing this and your story about it. Do you use it anymore?

Thank you very much, Raingirl. Minolta did indeed make great cameras and I finished up with several - and compared to my current full-frame Pentax it isn't heavy. :-) Sadly I haven't taken film for some years, since digital kept improving and a local camera shop made a hash of developing and printing some colour film. Now I have no nearby camera store, so no readily available film, plus the sheer convenience of digital.... But it (and my other old cameras) are prized memoirs.
