And as the sun sets ...

And as the sun sets ...
We can only hope that 2020 will bring better days in many ways. Not least an end to the huge fires that are causing so much damage at present in Australia - the smoke in this image is from a large one nearby. Best wishes for 2020, everyone.

Footnote AM 31/12. The fires have spread enormously overnight and this one now is classified as an "Emergency" level threat to local communities.

I have that hope too George. It is so frightening, and will take a long time to recover from. I also hope your wife recovers well and that 2020 can bring better health and great happiness to you both ~ Rosa

Scaring and beautiful at the same time. The situation in Victoria sounds dire at the moment. I hope that in 2020 these fires and the ones in California and elsewhere at last concentrate the minds of politicians and everyone else to the need for drastic changes. On a more personal note, may 2020 bring good health for your wife and for you and happiness too.

I've just been on the Internet to find out the state of the fires in Australia. Every day there is a new conflagration, and the firefighters are struggling to keep going. I wish you both all the best for 2020, and hope that you get some rain soon, but that doesn't seem likely. Stay safe.

The situation is disturbing and makes almost speechless.
Do politicians still want to risk New Year fireworks in the burning regions?
Only the very best for the turn of the year and for the New Year for you and your loved ones, George! Stay safe!

In here we have news update all the time and it seems to be worse and worse. All we can do is keep catching up, we feel so helpless... and in here we are used to fires too.
Just keep safe...and all my positive energy for both of you.

JUST A VERY QUICK NOTE TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT THERE HAS BEEN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE IN THE LOCAL REGION FROM THE FIRES. WE HAVE BEEN WITHOUT POWER OR COMMUNICATIONS SINCE 31 DECEMBER. JUST RESTORED UNDER AN HOUR AGO. CAN'T SPEND MORE TIME HERE AS WE HAVE MANY THINGS TO CATCH UP WITH AND NEED TO PREPARE FOR FURTHER FIRE RISKS EXPECTED ON SATURDAY.

Thanks for letting us know, George! I have heard about the new heat records for the coming weekend and can hardly find any words. So I would like to wish you and your wife as well as all the others concerned that you are as safe as possible and remain strong. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Now we are reading that there is gridlock on Bateman's bridge, of which you have posted photos of in the recent past. I am reading: 'The premier of the Australian state of New South Wales has declared a week-long state of emergency in response to the escalating bushfire threat.' Stay safe both of you.

Thank you very much, Amelia. I just posted some images from 31 December. Sadly, the next round of fire weather next Saturday could be even worse! We plan to be at the Evacuation Centre.

Out thoughts are with you George. I do hope that you , your family and community really are safe. I fear not !!!! The news we hear here every day in Britain gets worst from your area of Australia. As Amelia says -troops and long hold-ups on your roads surrounded by fires are scary to say the least. I know you are strong and resilient and I really trust that you can survive all this.

Here's for a safer and better new year. Herb and Eileen

Thank you, everyone. There has been some rain and, while in many areas it has not been enough to extinguish the fires, it has helped to bring them under control I'm glad to say that the risks seem to be off in our area.
