The old mine

The old mine
The "Lake George Mine" in Captain's Flat closed in 1962. Mining for gold and copper had begun there almost a century earlier. In later years, large quantities of silver lead and zinc also were extracted. This was just across the range from our property. HFF!

It's actually on top of a small hill, though not far from a creek, Bev. Strangely, flooding was one of the reasons for its closure - the pumps had trouble keeping up with the underground water from the rocks. The area is not dry by any means, but the sulphur fumes from the mine workings killed all the nearby vegetation, then the topsoil went and....

Underground water, and the unusual comings and goings of Lake George. There must be some interesting geology in this region.

Not a great place to be working, some big strikes and also some collapses.

I can imagine ... and thanks for the kind comments
on mine George ... its a place thats so lovely to visit
but its the late afternoon early evening that I love
to slowly walk through the grounds ... soon it will
stay open later as the dark nights pull out ... spring
and then all will seem to change ... (I like that too)

You kept it quiet about you being named after a lake, George ;-)
I agree with Maria: you chose a perfect sky to show off the earthy ground and tree silhouettes.

Wishing you all the best for the weekend.

They closed the entrance very thoroughly! I like the rich colour of the rocks.
