As a totally landlocked fellow, I don't know, but maybe clams burrowing to escape the scavengers at low tide?

Polytropos gets the price! Yep, a beachcomber scooping out sand in places where his medal detector indicated potential treasure. Lost jewelry more likely than valuable coins.
