Dutch Windmill with fence

Dutch Windmill with fence
Our air is back to normal (for now), and we delight in breathing freely and looking at blue skies. However, Central Oregon, including Portland, still has purple and brown air, and the fires up north remain out of control. There is some hope for a bit of rain early next week. Send good thoughts.

This is the northern windmill, known as the Dutch or Queen Wilhelmina windmill. Normally photographed with its lovely tulip garden, this is an angle featuring the obligatory fence.

Without Queen Wilhelmina (grandmother of the existing queen, Beatrix), the Dutch Windmill would not exist in Golden Gate Park because it was she who donated the structure to the city in 1902.

So far, so good. We may get a bit more smoke, but nothing like we had of late. But some very big fires in the mountains and in the north are still burning, and it's only September ... but this is the reality we live in, and we have no one to blame for it but ourselves.

Ah yes, the fence must come almost first in these Sarah. We have been following the great fires of your West Coast with some discomfort over here. Hopefully the rains will come soon for you over there. ps Great Windmill. Well done.

HFF and have a great weekend. Herb

Glad fires are over, what we saw on tv was frightening...
Breath fresh air, specially here on the virtual world where we can ban the awful masks! HFF Sarah

Fires are not over, but the smoke has cleared around here, for now. The fire season will likely continue, and the hurricane season, and the arctic ice is melting faster and faster.... so, speaking strictly for myself, having to wear a mask that makes it safe for me and others to move around freely feels like a small issue compared to what the future holds for humanity.
But I recognize that what for me is just a tool is for others a symbol of something greater.

You have a point, but nevertheless seing people's face, smile, expression is so important... not to be allowed in public is frightening, it is dictatorial, it erases one's individuality and the ability to communicate.
Not sure if it is the solution to the pandemic, that is not what I am saying or doubting about. It is just that we fought against burkas, in our laws one is not allowed to cover one's face in public (except for carnivals). And now we have a law against the law, but at least on the internet it is important IMHO to show our faces uncovered. It is what we have left and it is precious.

It is true that not seeing people smile is a loss, no doubt about that. I try to make up for it by smiling with my eyes, gesturing, waving, using body language .. (which is NOT natural when you're Swiss, haha!) There are many ways in which we communicate, after all.
And of course, when we meet friends and can be together (at a little distance), we can take off our masks.
Anyway, this won't last forever; next year, there will be vaccines, better/faster tests, better treatments, and restrictions can be eased. I often think of my parents and grandparents and what they endured, even in "peaceful" Switzerland, during the long six years of WWII. We have so much comfort that they didn't. My grandmother often didn't have food she could put on the table for her four children. So I feel blessed at all I have.

An impressive fence, Sarah. Glad that your nearest fires are under control, but let's hope that possible rain quenches the rest, Sarah. HFF, stay safe and have a great weekend.

There were some rains up north, especially in Oregon, bringing some relief. Down here, we're not likely to get any real rain anytime soon. So the fire season won't be over until it's over ... it's been a bit of a challenging year, and will likely *heat* up more come the elections!

You (our West Coast) are getting hammered. I sure hope you get rain - but not like the Southern Coast. What times we live in.
