Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey
Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire. A centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom

Views that inspired Bram Stoker and his Dracula novels, when he first visited in 1890.

Had to come Rosa :) A wonderful Abbey ruin in a great spot. I wonder if you went in -we would have done if not for the high price to enter just to take a few photos. Anyway, a fine main shot here and the pip isn't bad either. Here is one of my own taken a couple of years back: www.ipernity.com/doc/1081863/50555954

Cheers. Herb

Can't go there without getting a couple of shots Herb ;-))
Thanks for the link. They are lovely shots and on a beautiful sunny day.
Didn't have time to go inside, but I didn't notice the charge. I found it more interesting
inside the church, and we did walk a lot further past the ruins and looked around
the brewery. Some lovely countryside beyond it.
Cheers, Rosa.

Yes it must have been quite a sight Joe. It has a slightly haunted feeling now, or have I been reading too many Dracula books! Thanks for your kind comment.

I like the way you have captured very nicely the detail and texture of the stonework and architecture of the abbey Rosa. A lot of restoration work has been carried out on the abbey and surrounding buildings since I lived in Whitby in the late sixties. Back then it was in very poor condition and hardly visited, certainly not the tourist attraction it is today.

Enjoy your evening, Doug
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
It's good to hear that there has been a lot of restoration work Doug, and it certainly is a great tourist attraction. I seem to remember some historic old buildings being lost in this area in the 1960's. People care more now, but they should really have known better back then.

Good evening and a good new week, Rosa.

Two more excellent photos Rosa...............the Abby looks fantastic in the sunshine and the details in the architecture are awesome as is always the case with your images.

I don't think it looks at all spooky in these shots, but I imagine that with a little less light and a threatening sky (and maybe a little mist) it would look quite different..!!
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
It's a place that I would actually have liked bad weather! The ruins lend themselves to wind and dark clouds. I shouldn't complain about warmth & sunshine ;-))

Oh yes mist would have been perfect!!!

Thank you very much Gudrun. I have to say that your pictures from this Abbey were very impressive. I have been to Rievaulx Abbey, but long ago. I think it was 1984! We took a caravan all the way to Yorkshire :-) I have some old pictures I took at Fountains Abbey....somewhere!

Great images of the ruins of what obviously was a major building, Rosa. Would I be right in thinking that Henry VIII had something to do with the closure?
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to tiabunna club
I think the Abbey fell into disrepair and then along came Henry VIII. I also read that it was damaged during WWI but that had been sympathetically repaired.
Thank you for your kind comments George.

A ghostly allure that seems to have inspired Stoker, although he may have known it in better condition! Old and venerable stones witnessing a past splendour, and whose relief and texture you have rendered beautifully, Rosa.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Eric Desjours club
I don't think it was in a better condition when Stoker saw it. It must have been its position, high above the town, the wind (maybe) and dark cloudy conditions. Oh, I think I could write a book now ;-)) Thank you very much Eric.
