The Apostle garden takes its name from twelve yew domes with smaller pyramids on top that flank the path running up to the medieval front door. Historical photographs show that they were planted around 1911, after Sir Walter and Lady Flora Jenner took up residence, as part of the Arts and Crafts-inspired garden they developed. The domes gradually became larger and more angular making a grand entrance to the house, and the name the ‘Twelve Apostles’ lawn was coined.
