.. no longer

- used for anything - all 20+ buildings have been abandoned - people living in the area would love to see it used - as is, it is just an eyesore - this was a tower used for ____________ - think I know somebody I can ask, so will get back on that part - if it were used to test missiles, it is out in the open - everyone would have known about it - old aerial photos even show it in the open - a long history - began as a textile plant - was part of Fairchild when planes were made for WW2 - became part of of the Western Electric plant with a Government contract for guidance systems for Nike missiles / Hercules missiles former “Tarheel Army Missile Plant” sale was granted by the U.S. General Services Administration. sold to an Alabama company in 2004 -- rezoning has been requested so all 22 acres are the same At this plant all battery and radar control trailers plus LOPAR, TTR, MTR, and TRR radars were built and tested prior to shipment to the Army, mostly by rail. During the peak of the Nike SAFEGUARD there were between 3 and 4,000 employees. After WW2 ended, the Western Electric Company took over the plant, which was still a government-owned facility. In the 1950s & 60s, Western Electric manufactured large portions of the Nike Ajax & Hercules surface-to-air missile system at the Burlington plant. © All Rights Reserved

Architecture ..

of old - no longer able to patch it up - this downtown building will be demolished - yet, as much as can be salvaged will be - and used in the one replacing it - originally it was a wood building (late 1800's) - but burned - replaced by a brick structure ( from research) - it has held many businesses - the note on the top photo - shows where a metal rod was capped with the star shape - to keep the building from cracking any more - from the great Charleston Earthquake in 1886 - the Earthquake was so strong it damaged buildings at least as far as Danville, Virginia (some text courtesy of Times-News) © All Rights Reserved

Elegance ..

in stone - "The Historic Courthouse is an example of Neoclassical Revival Style architecture, a popular style for government buildings in the United States during the early 1900′s. Other examples can be seen in buildings like the White House and the Lincoln Memorial. " (from the National Historic Register site) The original courthouse was built in the late 1800s; replaced around 1923-24. This building was renovated between Aug. 2010 - Sept. 2011. © All Rights Reserved

Changes ..

Are coming to a colorful past - W.J. Nicks General Merchandise Building [ built in early 1850s ] - There are 5 steps up to the 1st floor - Had always wondered why -- Found out since the building is undergoing re-hab -- Way back in the day, the streets were dirt, multiple steps were to prevent any wandering livestock from coming into the store ! Someplace in a local History Book I've read that this was the 1st gas station in town .. no pumps, but it came in a glass jar.. Three stories high, it became 2 stories when Hurricane Hazel whipped through in 1954 and the roof came off; walls were leveled to the 2nd floor and it became 2 stories. Late 1990s and early 2000s , the building was braced with steel and a new roof installed .. again becoming 3 stories. The interior wood floor and walls are now being re-done to welcome a micro-brewery and a restaurant. I'll let you know how the food is .. am sure someone will give beer details ! The annex on the right, used as a laundry and more recently a barbershop has been removed for safety reasons. It is to be rebuilt. Will ' watch ' this happen -- most is going on inside. I'll get the annex when they get to that part. Photos as can get them. Expect things in front of the building that might block my view.. I'll work around it. © All Rights Reserved * 1 PiP .. a Ghost Sign * Archive Airings / AA257 / KEEPING HISTORY

. . . abandoned -- UPDATE: Our son drove past this the other day; part of the structure is gone; there are piles of old bricks - perhaps to be re-purposed? But .... he said there are very large steel beams behind this area of the building .... hope ? -- Will try to get newer photos and post them 03/13/2016 ..... no longer needed - this building, about 100,000 sq ft - has remained basically unused - for 43 yrs - some storage in there - but present owners say - ' it would cost too much to fix ' - excuse me - why didn't you bother to keep it in repair - must not have worked with ' your bottom line ' - I.E. profits - who cares if it is old - has more history than you care about - no, am not happy with you at all - reading through the History of Burlington [ by souls who know what they are writing about ] - so many Historical Structures are gone - really thought this town had learned that keeping history alive is important - but, supposed it hasn't - history still isn't worth saving - 1 Note - the Original Building - [ screenshot ] homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mwellis/book/chapter16.html The original Burlington Coffin Co. -- made of wood, it was re-built with bricks after it burned in the early 1900s .. © All Rights Reserved The Alphabet Site .. www.ipernity.com/doc/peggyc/30287673/in/album/873084 Wandering through my Archives, came across this forgotten photo of a unique building - A Coffin Factory - It is no longer standing - Demolished as I stood across the street, steam coming from my ears! The owners could have re-furbished it - They had no use for it - So, the lot stands empty with a new chain link fence around it - What a waste - 2 PiP The above link gives further information - ARCHIVE AIRINGS AA-270 ODDS AND ENDS © All Rights Reserved
