Pip ~ Not happy with the Ice Storm !

Lovely capture...How old is Pip ? I have always thought of Oklahoma being barren, & flat with constant wind ( well you get that alright).... but you have shown such an abundance of wildlife on your doorstep. Just goes to show that ipernity opens up the world with photos !!!

He is about 18mths now... I first saw him as a real baby !

Oklahoma... the west is flat and arid and barren... it also has a hillier wetter softer side in the far east of it and SE. Here in the centre.... we are a transition zone... I live in a 25 mile square sandstone ridges area.. flatter softer land around that.

No real hills... no natural lakes(many man made)... and the rivers are sand rivers. I have cacti and ice storms(had the first winter one last night) Temps range from -15F(-26C) to 120F(48C) and can rise and fall as much as 60° in a few hours. Then.. we have tornados and small earthquakes.... and downblasts and "straight line" winds.. which are baby Hurricanes.

Where I live is on the edge of 10,000 acres of Wildlife Management Area.

Oklahoma is roughly the size of the U.K omitting Ireland . That should give you a proportion.

I MISS THE SEA.. and I miss the Northern eco system.. and I would if I could move from here back to the UK.. but that isnt going to happen.

Barren landscapes have their certain appeal, but, in my mind, as a temporary novelty rather than a permanent home. I miss the GREEN of the coast so much, too! As you know, I understand everything you wrote above.

Oh Diane... yes.. we know dont we.

I miss "old"... and "green"..... and the sea... and so much more. You can't cure Homesickness... and you can't "get over it".

We managed last Winter without one... rare...and now... it isnt even December . Much of the land is weakened from first the droughts...and then the deluges. I suspect more trees will be lost.

Didn't know or remember that you had orchids, Pam. Would love to see a photo sometime.

They are just 3-4 the florist at the supermarket was throwing out as they were nearly dead.. and I just nursed them back to life. I lost 2 eventually although they recovered initially. The "Bridal Veil" one is a survivor.. snowslight.shutterfly.com/pictures/10344 (3 pics on my Snow's Light site) and I have a yellow one that is hanging on. The one that is oldest though I got at Walgreens one easter soon after i came to the USA. It now has 2-3 flower spears a year (again the Snow's Light site snowslight.shutterfly.com/pictures/7565 about 7 pics)

You've done a remarkable job of growing and blooming them. The white is magnificent with all its flowers and the red is stunning in its olor. Next time I have orchids that need some TLC I'll send them your way.

Wouldn't dare try to put a name to either. They're both hybrids and the white looks like a hybrid that has Phal. aphrodite and one of the smaller species in its background, but that's as far as I would dare guess.
