Garden Spider (Arenas diadematus)

Garden Spider (Arenas diadematus)
This is the commonest and most well known of the Orb Web spiders..........and I found it, funnily enough, in my garden. I would have liked to have got an overhead shot, but it refused to cooperate. The background is a rather grubby panel on the wall underneath one of our back windows,.

Best viewed large if you can bear it..!!

I normally have dozens of these in my garden at this time of year, but this is one of only 3 or 4 I've seen so far :-(

trester88, Aschi "Freestone", Eunice Perkins, Fred Fouarge and 13 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thanks for commenting Homaris, but I'm not sure what you mean......perhaps something has been lost in translation?

I can't argue with that.........I don't mind photographing them, but I'm not keen on touching them! Glad you like the photo though.

Thank you very much Güni.............I'm pleased you like this shot. Yes, another name for it is a Cross garden spider.

I agree with you that they are fascinating to look at.........but there seem to be very few of them around this year so far. I shall keep my eyes open. They're not as impressive as the Raft Spider in your recent shot though..!!

Indeed you did Isabel..........and I'm glad this one pleases you.

It's living very close to my back door and I'm waiting for it to face the other way so I can take another photo of it.

I found another crab spider recently........which I'll post a photo of this week sometime.

Superb macro, Keith!!
I like to see them outside the house

Thanks Judite.........these very rarely come inside (except for sheds etc), but I'm not too keen on house spiders, which can be far too big..!!

We have a "Spider-catcher"........which is a very small battery operated hoover with a long plastic tube attached........they suck up spiders we find indoors and hold them. You can then release them outside without harming them by simply turning the gadget off and shaking the tube clear. Ingenious!

Ha, ha........that sort of thing happens to me as well, especially this time of year. I thought we'd missed the Spider activity but this past week of high temperatures seems to have Brough them out.
