A visit to Cowdray ruins. World Photography Day 2023.

A visit to Cowdray ruins. World Photography Day 2023.
A bit of a disappointment to be honest. My wife and I always try to get out and about together, but we're unable to get too far off road nowadays which is why we decided on this location. The car park is close by to where we're standing.

We arrived to find the the ruins were completely fenced off. In addition the Walled Garden and Tea Rooms had been closed down. However, I still managed to get a few photos and it was good to get out in the fresh air.

We ended up going out for lunch nearby and still had a decent day out and at least the rain held off :-))

A bit of history: Cowdray House consists of the ruins of one of England's great Tudor houses, architecturally comparable to many of the great palaces and country houses of that time. It is situated in the Parish of Easebourne, just east of Midhurst, West Sussex standing on the north bank of the River Rother. It was largely destroyed by fire on 24 September 1793, but the ruins have nevertheless been Grade I listed.

Nouchetdu38, Jean Paul Capdeville, Frans Schols, Jean-luc Drouin and 16 other people have particularly liked this photo

Best laid plans don’t always work out.

I felt sure this was going to say this was a visit to your ancestral home.
So glad you had a successful plan B.

What a pity it was shut off. It looks very interesting. It is a nuisance when you can't walk far anymore, I do know.

Your wife doesn't seem disappointed, a lovely smile! The ruins look very impressive, a pity they seem to be unsafe and are fenced off.

You had much better weather than we did, Keith, and your wife's smile is a great bit of sunshine.

It was misty to start with but by the time we arrived there the sun was out and stayed out all day. My wife is nearly always smiling and she's very tolerant of me continually taking photos.

A nice image of your W. P. D. Keith there seems little point in listing buildings if they are not going to be maintained there is one a couple of miles from me Bradgate House Stable Block it's grade II* on land owned by a large quarrying company so they should look after it they do nothing just waiting for it to fall down, it's never been open to the public although I have vague memories of going to a tea party there as a child

Keith Burton club has replied to Peter Castell club
Thanks for your comments Peter...........always appreciated.

The reason the place is fence off is because it's being maintained. The ruins are usually open to the public, but now and then they have to have checks for safety etc., and to allow remedial work to take place.

Well, perhaps the day was a bit disappointing for you, but for myself, getting to see your family member and see the area you like to go to for pleasure is great. And the photo captures the location quite well. Makes me wish I could see it!

It looks like your wife accepts your photographic tendencies just fine! That's always a good thing - haha.

Had you planned on taking a photo inside the ruins? Had you been there before?

Impressive building, Keith. What a pity for the fenced estate - probably too dangerous to wander around? And "Nice to meet you, Mrs. Burton" :-)

Keith Burton club has replied to Christa1004 club
Thank you so much Christa................you're very kind. It's good of you to stop by.

I think that the ruins close for a while each year for safety checks and any necessary repairs,

Thank you Jean Paul.............we were lucky that it didn't rain that day, as it had for the two days previously. It was a bit muddy underfoot, but. not too bad.

I feel sorry for those affected by the very. high temperatures, especially those affected by the terrible wildfires. We're quite lucky at the moment with temperatures fairly normal for this time of year (in the low to mid 20s centigrade). If it gets too hot, my wife and I don't even go out!

I'll pass your greeting on to my wife........she'll be pleased :-))
