Cowdray Estate, Midhurst, West Sussex

Cowdray Estate, Midhurst, West Sussex
Some of the cottages and other buildings found in the grounds of the Cowdray House Ruins, on the Cowdray Estate, Midhurst, West Sussex. The small building on the right is a store house (hat was probably used for grain). The little mushroom-like legs it's standing on are called Staddle Stones and were designed to help guard against water seepage and vermin. Better viewed large for detail.

There is a close-up shot of the grain store in the PiP. Thanks for looking.

These beautiful buildings look to be very well maintained (bricked up windows excepted) and the grain store is a real gem, (love the pip)
Two superb images both with excellent perspectives and superb clarity, Keith
a wonderful place for a fascinating day out I have little doubt !

Thanks Roger..........such kind and well thought out comments as always. Glad you like both photos.

It looks as if two cottages have been made into one and the bricked up bits would be the upstairs window and the door...........but that's just a guess.

Your main pic is fantastic Keith, that diagonal line of gorgeous old buildings leading to the star that is the even older building! The PiP is equally magical, it exudes atmosphere. A smashing pair both with your usual attention to sharp details.

I agree with your supposition about the bricked up bits - I’m surprised it got planning permission tho’.

Hope all is well with you.

Many thanks Maggie. It's a pretty interesting place to visit even when the ruins are fenced off......I just wish they'd put it on the website! I got a few shots through the gaps in the fence and I'll post them in due course.

I'm not sure about planning permission...............the whole estate is privately owned by the Viscount Cowdray. I don't expect he even bothered asking!!

Une bien belle ferme. Je suis étonné par la petite taille des "Staddle stones" On voit ça ici aussi souvent chez nous mais plus haut. leur rôle était effectivement aussi d'isoler la réserve de grains des rats et autres nuisibles
