H F F......................"Yomper"

H F F......................"Yomper"
HFF everyone. I hope you're all staying safe and well and that you're looking forward to the weekend.

This statue, called "Yomper" was sculpted by Philip Jackson and stands outside what used to be the Royal Marines Museum in Southsea, Hampshire. A "Yomp" is a march with heavy equipment over difficult terrain. Just out of shot there is a plaque which reads "This statue was unveiled by Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven on 8th July 1992 to commemorate all the Royal Marines and those who served with them in the South Atlantic during the Falklands War of 1982".

After disembarking from ships at San Carlos on East Falkland, on 21 May 1982, Royal Marines and members of the Parachute Regiment yomped with their equipment across the islands, covering 56 miles (90 km) in three days carrying 80-pound (36 kg) loads.

There's another image in the PiP.

Best viewed large, on black. Thanks for looking :-)

As a young child, I had to experience World War II and leave my homeland.
Therefore, I say with the utmost conviction that no war is good and worthy of glorification...

HFF ! It's an appealing piece of sculpture reminding us of those killed and hopefully of some comfort to their families. Otherwise I'm with UdoSm. I too was a young child in World War 2. And, at the moment I'm ambivalent about the Union Jack. It seems to have been hijacked by political parties that few in Scotland vote for. Sorry. I sound like a real grump. It's the snow and spending too much time reading the news. Have a good weekend and stay safe.

Wow, that's an AWESOME sculpture, Keith! Loved the description and got me thinking about how the army routinely forces heavy gear marches. Found a page talking about how soldiers are more overloaded than ever these days...can you imagine being forced to carry 100 to 150 lbs for 9 MILES?!! INSANITY! www.popularmechanics.com/military/research/a25644619/soldier-weight

Excellent information Keith. I haven't seen this statue in Southsea. One to look out for.
I like both pictures very much. The Union flag stounds out well against the blue sky in the PiP.

HFF and wish you a good weekend. Take care!

Thank you David. I remember it well............I was onboard HMS Fearless. We carried the Royal Marines into San Carlos water for their landings. It was known as bomb alley to us back then!
