Mandarin Duck

Mandarin Duck
A non-native species in the UK, these beautiful ducks were introduced from the Far East, where they can still be found. It is believed they were brought to the UK for private collections and subsequently escaped or were released. They can now be found on park lakes and other wetlands with overhanging trees, mainly in South East England, but also in North England, Wales and Scotland.

This was taken on a very windy Mill Pond at Langstone Harbour, Hampshire. I've seen these ducks in places like the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust but this is the first one I've seen in the wild. I'm guessing there was a female around somewhere, but I couldn't see it.

Please view large, on black.

Goode catch Keith, when I first saw one of these on a pond in Brandon park in Suffolk, I thought it was a child's toy it was so still, then it started to swim away and I kicked myself as per usual no camera ready.

I took Isabel's advice and viewed large on black, and it's beautiful Keith. Such lovely detail and colour. When Sophie was much younger I used to take her to a park where there were a lot of them. She used to call them Mandareeen ducks and was fascinated by them.

A superb image with the light hitting the feathers and enhancing the colours. I've seen them in Fife in the wild in a couple of places

These always look so beautiful Keith. Not seen one for a bit now as I am not travelling to the places they frequent (usually nice river stretches or big parks). Anyway, another great capture here. Very well done.

Keep safe. Herb

Glad you like this beautiful duck as much as I do. Thanks for all your kind comments and stars.

I shall have to keep a look out for it in the nesting season............apparently, unlike other ducks, they nest in trees..!!

I always think of these the way I think of some 1950-60s American cars: over-designed! ;-)
