I guess Roger this is the difference between point and shoot against taking a moment to set the camera, view the subject, compose and finally shoot. The end result like here has to be very rewarding.

I wonder when these started to be called bluebells? A couple of 100 years ago I believe they were called azure hare-bells. Bluebell is a better name of course.

Many thanks Andy I found this on the National Trust website, If you plant bluebells, you should make sure it's the English bluebell, not the Spanish version. This is a more vigorous plant and could out-compete our delicate native flower

I'm aware of the invasiveness of the inferior Spanish variety, Roger; it has been a long-running sore in gardening circles. I was more intrigued with the name which has changed, I think, over the years and I idly wondered why.

I recall reading a book on English plant names some years ago, so I may have got the details wrong. But 'azure hare-bell' stuck in my mind as the old English name for bluebell! Frustratingly, the book is in Cornwall (and I am in Madrid) and I can't remember the name of the book or the author so I can't investigate from here as I would wish!
