Remember These?

Remember These?
Bridgwater High Street, Thanks to Tiabunna it dates to early 1960s and what I take to be a Scammel tractor unit, with my Triumph Herald car parked behind the man stood with his bicycle,

A wide load with no signs, orange beacons or escort vehicles not even extended wing mirrors how times change,

Please enlarge for details.

This was the main A39 road, hard to believe when you see the amount of traffic it carries now.

Found in a box of old photographs so not my image.

Great view on the past, sadly I think I recognise nearly all of the vehicles even if the memory fails on the names, but what was that on the trailer? Looks like something from the top of a silo.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Roger Dodger club
Thank you Roger, like you I remember far to many of the vehicles for comfort, My guess is as you say the top of a silo probably for cement storage, Hinkley point power station work started in 1957 and the six miles or so of new roads was prior to that which would confirm this image as mid 1950s

Pure nostalgia hon. I have been trying to pick out he buildings. What is the archway(?) at the bottom of the High street past the Royal Clarence Hotel building? I wonder if this photo might have been taken from the upper window of the old Bridgwater Mercury building.

Thanks Bev, I suspect the police maned the junctions to give it a clear run then left it on it's own.
It had left town and it was not a problem to them anymore.

A fascinating old image, Roger. The Triumph Herald dates it as no earlier than 1959, but I'm intrigued whether the street is meant to be one way? Even more puzzling is seeing parked cars on the right facing in both directions.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to tiabunna club
Thank you George, the Triumph Herald places it as early 1960s then as I bought it nearly new incidentally the turning circle on that car was incredible and no it was a two way street but now is only in the direction the lorry is travelling and we have no regulations about direction parking, well not in daylight anyway, the street is mainly for shoppers these days.

Great trip back in time Roger, The Triumph Herald, I don't know how much you paid for it at the time but it would set you back about £4000 today. Yes and Pickford's were the number one removal company at the time and I think still operate today. Any idea what the load is?.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to HappySnapper
Thank Maurice, I cannot remember the price of the Herald but we had a friend who always had new cars and I bought a couple of his cast offs as they were always immaculate, the load I suspect is a cement silo on it's way to the now decommissioned Hinkly point A station site.
