My passport is valid until 2025 but Ian's expired in 2010.

The United Kingdom exited the European Union 31st January 2020.
The EU is an economic and political union involving 28 European countries. It allows free trade, which means goods can move between member countries without any checks or extra charges. The EU also allows free movement of people, to live and work in whichever country they choose. It is governed by the European Parliament, which has more than 700 members, with representation determined by the population size of the member country.
The UK joined in 1973 (when it was known as the European Economic Community) and it is the first member state to withdraw.

Quite a decision to leave the EU with so many issues unresolved Jean. My family in England are divided as to that decision, which I am sure is the same for others. Hopefully, it will all turn out for the best.

Hi Jean. My husband is Scottish, but we have been in Australia for so long it is difficult for us to judge. What do you think of the idea of Scottish independence? Then Scotland could join the EU in its own right.

The political cultures of Scotland and England seem to be diverging and government from Westminster is becoming increasingly unsatisfactory as the majority of MP's are rightly English and their wishes always prevail. PR might help but independence is becoming more and more popular as a result of Brexit. The thought of all the negotiations involved to separate appals me but nevertheless I feel both countries would probably benefit in the end. At the moment it's a bit ironic that it's right for the UK to be free to leave the European Union but not right for Scotland to be free to leave the United Kingdom.

The EU now has 27 members... Happily the UK is still in the customs union, so I can buy things from the UK and no customs are charged. That'll probably stop at the end of the year (endless negotiations...) as customs charges are way too much for the individual person.
