Cape Disappointment North Head lighthouse (#1205)
Remnants from a surveillance post created during WWII, the post had radar and very powerful searchlights. The placard in the adjacent picture describes the post and the conditions at the time.
As noted on multiple placards in the park, most of the trees and brush seen here did not exist when the surveillance post was built. When the cape was used by the weather service and then by the military, it was largely clear cut to allow for better visibility. When Washington state parks took over, they ceased the clear cutting. Due to the very high rainfall and fog, the forest grew very quickly.
