Long Beach WA (#1197)

Long Beach WA (#1197)
I’d wanted to stay in the Astoria, OR, area and, because it was going to be cold at night, was wanting to stay in a motel. Unfortunately the motels in Astoria are fairly expensive, so I decided to try Long Beach, WA – across the river and 20 miles away. I was also a little curious as to what a beach community in foggy, cold, coastal Washington would be like. Little was I prepared for what felt like a fogged-in version of the typical honky-tonk beach town of bars, rides, and cheap motels that one typically finds in more southern locations in the U.S.!

We drove out to this peninsula very briefly during the return leg of the 2006 Alaska trip so we could take a look at the open Pacific for the first time. (We'd only seen the Inside Passage to that point.) We didn't stay long, but I told Robin at the time that it reminded me a lot of a particular honky-tonk town on the Georgia coast outside Savannah we've always enjoyed.
