Looks like they used real (i.e., lime-based) mortar--it's weathering out in relief, indicating it's harder than the bricks!

When I looked at the 'brick' itself (adjacent picture), I couldn't figure out how the structure lasted as long as it did. That explains if at least somewhat.

Don't have any good way at all to estimate, there isn't much history of the area. A wild guess would be that they started farming in the area in the early 1900's. It looked like this had been abandoned quite some decades back.
