Huhn des Waldes - Chicken of the wood - Poulet des bois
Kürzlich entdeckte ich bei einer Wanderung durch einen Buchen-Mischwald einen Pilz, der schon auf größere Entfernung wegen seiner Größe (im unteren Teil knapp 40 cm!) und seiner leuchtend gelb-orangen Färbung zu sehen war. Es war wie ich daheim herausbekam der Gemeine Schwefelporling (Laetiporus sulphureus), ein gefährlicher Baumparasit, der aggressiv das Holz zerstört und letztlich zum Absterben des Baums führt. In diesem Fall war die Parasitierung sehr stark, denn auf der anderen Seite des Baumstamms befand sich noch zusätzlich ein mächtiger Pilzkörper.
Wikipedia informierte mich, dass junge, saftige Exemplare gegessen werden können und nach Huhn schmecken. Entsprechende Rezepte existieren im Internet. Deswegen der Name „Chicken of the Woods“ ("Huhn des Waldes") für diesen Pilz im Englischen Sprachraum.

Recently, while hiking through a mixed beech forest, I discovered a mushroom that could be seen from a great distance because of its size (almost 40 cm in the lower part!) and its bright yellow-orange color. It was, as I found out at home, the sulphur polypore (Laetiporus sulphureus), a dangerous tree parasite that aggressively destroys the tree trunk and ultimately leads to the death of the tree. In this case, the parasitization was very strong, because there was also a massive mushroom body on the other side of the tree trunk.
Wikipedia informed me that young, juicy specimens can be eaten and taste like chicken. Corresponding recipes exist on the internet. Hence the name "Chicken of the Woods" for this mushroom in the English-speaking world.
