Ein stacheliges Monster - A prickly monster
I found this caterpillar, about 5 cm in size, feeding on a leaf of common hound's tongue (Cynoglossum officinale). It is the caterpillar of the garden tiger moth (Arctia caja), which has white spots on the sides and whose surface is covered with rather long chitin hairs, which are brown-red in the front area. The head area (see note) is not visible because short brown-red bristles protrude over it like a roof. After pupation, strikingly coloured moths hatch in July (see Wikipedia article).
The brown bear is an endangered species and therfore protected in Germany. I am not aware of any toxic effect of the chitin hairs.
