In the photo fresh flowers of the common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), which show their beautiful pink anthers only from close up. Hawthorn flowers emit a very strong fragrance, which some people even find intrusive and unpleasant. This species of hawthorn is easily confused with the midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata), which, as the name suggests, has two pistils in the flower.
