Die Silfra-Spalte: Links Europa - Rechts Amerika / Left Europe - Right America - PiP und Notiz

Island liegt genau über der Berührungsstelle von Eurasischer und Nordamerikanischer Platte der Erkruste, die voneinander wegdriften. Und im Þingvellir findet sich die sogenannte Silfra-Spalte, wo man sogar messen kann, dass sich diese beiden Platten der Erdkruste mit einer Geschwindigkeit von rund einem Zentimeter pro Jahr voneinander wegbewegen, denn die Silfra-Spalte wird jedes Jahr rund 1 cm breiter! Und: Die seit Jahrmillionen gleichbleibende Bewegung hat auf Island ihre Spuren hinterlassen: an vielen Stellen reißt die Erdkruste auf und es hat sich ein mehrere Kilometer breiter Grabenbruch gebildet. Nirgends kann man das schöner sehen als in Þingvellir.

Iceland lies just above the contact between the Eurasian and North American plates of the earth's crust, which drift away from each other. And in the Þingvellir there is the so-called Silfra fissure, where you can even measure that these two plates of the earth's crust move away from each other at a speed of about one centimetre per year, because the Silfra fissure becomes about 1 cm wider every year! And: The constant movement for millions of years has left its traces on Iceland: in many places the earth's crust tears open and a trench fracture several kilometres wide has formed. Nowhere can this be seen more beautifully than in Þingvellir.
