The Beauty Inside ...

The Beauty Inside ...
So, a fun week for all involved with The Sunday Challenge, well at least for some and I include myself in that category.

The theme this week was HDR (High Dynamic Range) Imagery. It's a technique that really does seem to attract quite diverse opinions as I've found out over this last week as I've posted various attempts at creating an HDR image.

As it happens I've always liked HDR, at least for certain subjects and when it has been applied in a controlled and sympathetic fashion. However, it wasn't something I'd ever attempted myself until this week so as I said earlier it has been a fun week.

So much so that after playing around with the trial version of Photomatix I ended up taking the plunge and buying the software outright. If nothing else it means that I can continue to experiment with the medium without having the Photomatix watermark applied to my final creations.

This particular shot that I've ended up using as my main submission to TSC is actually taken inside All Saints Church in Northallerton. In the past I've taken several shots of the exterior, but this was the first time I'd ventured inside and I have to say I was most impressed by what I found. Not quite York Minster perhaps, but very attractive all the same.

I just hope that my HDR take on this subject helps convey at least some of the beauty and splendour of this grand old church.

By the way, this was the result of combining three RAW files: one at normal exposure, one at -1.5, and one at +1.5. You can a representation of the three base files in the Notes.

Perfect HDR, beautiful church, and good composition. Once again, if not said, I would not even suspect it is HDR.

A very impressive result. It makes a terrific subject for HDR. Wonderful detail and warm tones, Paul. As Sami says you would not know that it is HDR just looks like an excellent photo.

I really can't see any flaws on edges like typical for "bad HDR". Besides on subject like this the light can be "explained". As a viewer I just think there is maybe large windows or some other source of light, which lits ceiling.

On many HDR images taken outside, I often start to wander: "How on earth something like the shadow side of a large building can be equally lit or even brighter than the sky?"

the HDR works really well on this, it's a technique that seems to suits the light in churches

It's a perfect subject for this challenge and a great outcome. Not sure that I would have bought softwAre for this challenge but that's just me.

Glad you like both the subject and the outcome Jan ... appreciate the fave too! :)

As for buying the software, I think you misunderstood me. I was experimenting with the free trial version and would have happily used that for the challenge. However, I found the software to my liking and have bought it for future use as I can see me doing a lot more HDR work! :)

(This is so realistic, especially on black, Paul that I can almost taste the communion wafers. ;)

But seriously, it's just gorgeous and I can see the difference. This, to me, is one of the nicest ways to use HDR, very lightly.

Hi Paul, to my eye this is a great example of well used HDR techniques. A very nice balance of interior light and shadow, whilst at the same time allowing the stained glass to be displayed beautifully.

I use Photomix myself and although my tatty old PC struggles with it times (slow and lacking memory) it does the job. I would agree that HDR has a mixed reputation and, in my humble opinion, should be used with care so as not to produce a "Cartoon" effect on the image. HDR is not for all, but it can help produce an image closer to that seen by the eye. Obviously some take the HDR effect to the extreme, producing an image I personally do not like. As with all photography, opinion is subjective and I very much believe in "each to his own".

All the best, Doug

So pleased you like it Doug and I'm pleased to hear that we have very similar views on what makes for a good HDR shot. Thanks also for the star/fave ... much appreciated! :)
