Around The Corner From Anywhere ...

Around The Corner From Anywhere ...
This scene was captured for this week's Sunday Challenge, which had the theme of what's left.

I spotted this discarded can lying against the perimiter fence of Allertonshire school in Northallerton and thought it ideal for the challenge. I also liked the crispness of the brand on what appeared to be a fairly new can and the surrounding shadows, which I hoped would give the shot some interest.

Sadly, although Coke has been around since 1886 and been generally available in cans since 1960, many people still struggle it seems to either deposit the empty cans in a litter bin or take it home for recycling.

And so I felt the slogan that the company used way back in 1927 to promote the product provided an ideal title for my shot, as this photograph really could have been taken around the corner from anywhere.

.t.a.o.n., Karen's Place, , and 13 other people have particularly liked this photo

Great capture, description, and mention of what had been a timeless slogan.

Now why didn't I think of this!!?

My house is on a taxi route and I collect a large bin worth of cans, and discarded hamburger foam packs per week - our locals appear to have no concept of littering at all!

Great shot!

Thanks Paul ... glad you like it! As for your locals ... I guess they don't need to worry about littering if you're going around picking it up for them - lol! ;)

Great capture, Paul! The lighting gives a bit of a stark quality to the image emphasizing how out-of-place this coke can is from its surroundings.

Great image to portray the challenge but also a sad commentary of the way folks just drop stuff and leave it. Some states here have a bottle deposit to encourage folks to take the bottle/can back to the store for recycling. In Michigan it was a 10 cent refund for each can/bottle returned. It really did cut down on that type of little but it sure didn't help the fast food litter that appeared after the snow melted. :( Nicely done Paul)

Glad you like it and thanks for the fave Chris ... always appreciated! :)

Interesting what you say about the deposit on the bottles. I can when I was a kid they did that over here and we'd go around just looking for empty bottles to be able to claim the deposit back. Sadly, I don't think that happens today! :(

they still do in Michigan, not sure about the other states. Here in Virginia there is no bottle deposit but many of the bottles and cans do get recycled. :)

I find it very sad that you can carry a full can/bottle of something, drink it then toss it!
(I bet this would look just as great with the Coke can s/c'd)

Couldn't agree more Wendi with all that you've said. As for going the s/c route, I did do a quick mock-up of that before uploading the original full colour shot. However, I thought the shadow details got lost somewhat ... might just need to go back and play with the sliders some more! ;)

Good find for the challenge and captured in a great light!

Since we have deposit on beverage cans there are no more so many discarded, but still lots of coffee-to-go-cups and fast food litter! The same everywhere! :(

Many thanks for the kind comment Dida ... glad you like it! :)

As for the deposit thing, when I was growing up they did that with bottles, but never with cans, and even with bottles I'm pretty sure they stopped it years ago! :(

We pay a deposit on all cans and bottles and get the money back when we hand them back, but I still get some thrown into my garden now and then.

People leave you bottles so you can claim the deposit back? How generous! ;)

Seriously, when I was growing up they did that with bottles in the UK, but never with cans, and even with bottles I'm pretty sure they stopped it years ago! :(

The light and shadows here are really so nice Paul and great subject and idea. I can see this as a book cover to a murder mystery.

We used to hunt for the bottles too as kids. We'd find really gross ones with cigarette butts and slugs in them, but we would gather them up and head to the nearby little store and claim our prizes; a penny for the small bottles and a whole nickel for the bigger ones. Oh the candy we would buy! (You brought back a great memory with this. ;)
