Der wissenschaftliche Name lautet übersetzt „Der Junggeselle“, weil die in Deutschland überwinternden Buchfinken überwiegend Männchen sind.
Früher galten Buchfinken als Regenboten, da sie auch dann noch singen, wenn andere Vögel bei Niederschlag schon verstummen. Oft ist dann nur ein kurzes „rrhü“ zu hören, was als Regenruf oder Rülschen bezeichnet wird.
Sein lautstarker Gesang hat den Buchfink schon im 15. Jahrhundert auch zu einem beliebten Käfigvogel gemacht. Selbst heute veranstalten Vogelzüchter noch jährlich im Harz ein „Wettsingen“ nach traditionellen Regeln. www.lbv.de/ratgeber/naturwissen/artenportraits/detail/buchfink
