Möglicherweise hat der Gletscher früher - als er noch höher war - dem Berghang Stabilität gegeben...

Herzlichen Dank, Udo! Genauso ist es! Und offenbar hat der Berg noch mehr und größere Risse...
Als wir zum Gletscher sind, war die Zufahrtsstraße, die wir beim ersten Besuch genutzt hatten, gerade gesperrt und wir konnten nur weiter vorne ran.

Ein beeindruckender Blick auf diesen Gletscher und ein interessantes Erdrutschphänomen auf dem Berg rechts!!!!

A spectacular view in these two photos Gudrun..............I notice that the link you posted was dated 2018, so what they predicted back then has started to happen and it likely to get much worse. Such a dangerous situation.........I hope people take notice of the warnings!

Thank you so much, Keith! Right now there is no active warning, I guess spring/early summer with snow/ice melt are the dangerous times. Anyway, they wouldn't hesitate to close off all access if it got really dangerous.

This area looks very dramatic and also very dangerous. This is why tour guides are so important in a country like Iceland.

Thanks a lot, Amelia! I read about an incident when a Spanish tourist followed the tracks of a special tour truck on to Langjökull glacier- in a normal car! And the whole family got out and walked around on the glacier, totally oblivious of the dangers... that caused quite a stir in Iceland.

but the future of this area due to climate change truly doesn't look bright.

Thanks a lot, * ઇઉ *! Unfortunately all glaciers will shrink and eventually disappear, though Vatnajökull due to its enormous size will be the last one to go in Iceland. The first Icelandic glacier has officially been declared dead a few years ago, they even had a ceremony.
In Iceland there will also be an uptick in volcanism as less weight on top of volcanoes will make it easier for eruptions to break through the ice.

Great images of this glacier, Gudrun. Sadly, yet another glacier where climate change is being demonstrated by the retreat.

Merci, poly! Ja, das Berner Oberland macht vor, wie es am Vatnajökull in ein paar Jahrzehnten aussehen wird. Nur dass das Berner Oberland zu eurem Glück keinen Hotspot/ MantlePlume hat, sonst würde es für die Schweiz ungemütlich;-)

In der Schweiz könnt ihr gut drauf verzichten, Bern im Ascheregen wäre nicht so der Brüller;-)
