Hofsjökull

Hofsjökull
Hofsjökull is Iceland's 3rd largest glacier covering a roughly circular area of 925m". Like other Icelandic glacers it has a volcano with a huge caldera underneath and is retreating considerably.

Hofsjökull hat eine fast runde Form und ist mit 925m" Oberfläche Islands drittgrößter Gletscher. Wie bei anderen isländischen Gletschern liegt ein Vulkan mit einer riesigen Caldera unter dem Eis, das zunehmend abschmilzt.

Besten Dank, Lothar! Lol, wenn das Gewicht vom Eis weg ist, gehen die Vulkane verstärkt hoch, das dämpft dann vielleicht für ein paar Jahre die Erwärmung;-)

Schönen Dank, Volker! Nein, dort war zumindest in jüngerer Zeit kein Eis. Vor dem Gletscher liegt noch eine Talsenke, die man hier nicht sieht, bis dahin gingen früher die Gletscherzungen, heute sind dort Seen und Feuchtgebiete.

Während der letzten Eiszeit war das natürlich alles komplett vergletschert. Aber seither war das Hochland zwischen den großen Gletschern eisfrei.

Das sieht man auch bei uns in der Schweiz im Mittelland. Da hat es zum Teil enorm grosse Gesteinsbrocken, die da eigentlich gar nicht hingehören :-)

I love the shadows of the clouds on the barren landscape. It is worrying to read about the rapid retreat of the glacier, and all glaciers in fact. Humankind is causing so many problems which are now reaching a critical point.
