"The angler" – gar nicht gewusst, dass es diesen Ausdruck auch in Englisch gibt! Einverenglischt, wie "Rucksack"? ;-)

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, "angle" meaning to "fish with a hook" comes directly from Old English, and so is cognate with the German word. Altho everyone's heard of Izaak Walton's 1653 book "The Compleat Angler", the word's a bit old-fashioned in modern English. It's more commonly used figuratively these days ("angle for a compliment"), and may also have influenced the use of "angle" to mean "purpose." (What's his angle?)

And Walton's archaic spelling of "complete" has been used in so many titles since it's become a cliche!

The Latin word angulus means angle or corner, nook,, niche....so maybe it's the fishing with hook angler that's figurative;-)
