Nederland - Velsen-Noord, Strand Noordpier

Strand Noordpier (Noordpier beach) is located directly north of the Noordzeekanaal (North Sea Canal) and south of Wijk aan Zee. The beach is one of the widest in the Netherlands. The Noordpier - built to prevent the harbour from silting up and to offer ships a safe passage to the North Sea Canal - causes a special wind and waves, making the beach a popular spot for wave, wind and kite surfing.

Officially, the pier and the beach are located in Velsen-Noord, but can only be reached via Wijk aan Zee. That is why many people call it the pier of Wijk aan Zee.

The beach may be beautiful and wide, but what struck me during a visit on a freezing winter's day was the horizon pollution caused by the Tata Steel factory and some wind turbines. This makes it for me also one of the ugliest beaches in the Netherlands.

Think the beach is really lovely..............wide, long and pretty much deserted. Easy to see why the surfers etc like it. The rocks make great foreground interest, especially with the coating of snow.

I like the close up images of the wind turbines and steel plant in the PiPs............definitely not beautiful, but there's nothing to be done about them.

A nicely taken reality image Jaap of course it spoils the view but apart from some very isolated tribes it is part of the life style we all lead, at least in the Netherlands the pollution is strictly controlled unlike some countries. I look out at two small turbines I would like to know how long it is before they have generated as much power as was needed to build and install them

It is certainly a vast and beautiful expanse of sand Jaap. It reminds me of similar beaches such as Pendine and Pembrey on the south coast of Wales, minus the the industrial complex. I Think the foreground of the rocks and birds help to keep the eyes focused on the beauty of the beach in this fine composition.

I think I saw the steel mill from Ijmuiden (beach or marina) a few years ago - however, I don't remember those turbines. And they can be loud! I once went on a hike which led me through a wind park, and as I approached it I thought of low flying planes, having lived near a military airport for decades. It was those turbines, and I had a headache still at least half an hour after passing that place...
